Your Ayurvedic Constitution

According to Ayurveda our bodies are governed by three ruling principles called Vata, Pitta and Kapha. All three exist in every person, however the balance between the three in each person is different. Generally an individual has one dosha that is primary, one that is secondary and one that is least prominent. Sometimes an individual can have two dosha that act as their primary constitution and rarely an individual will have all three present in equal proportions.
We each have our own unique, personal combination of the three dosha and it is this individual combination that creates our health. When one dosa becomes either excessive or diminished from its natural state this creates ill-health. In Ayurveda we seek to create both external and internal harmony to allow our individual constitution to remain balanced.
Ayurveda is a phenomenally deep and rich science that requires far more study and thought than these simple paragraphs to understand. We encourage you to educate yourself and begin the path to knowing yourself more completely.
The chart provided below is adapted from The Ayurvedic Book of Home Remedies by Dr. Vasant Lad and is meant to give you a rough idea of your personal constitution. We suggest getting a seperate piece of paper and making three columns labeled Vata, Pitta and Kapha. As you move down the list simply mark on your paper which desciption seems to best fit you. Sometimes you will find yourself indecisive and usure of which column to mark. Please remember that there is no right or wrong answer, you are describing your own being...feel free to mark more than one column if it seems appropriate. At the end total the number of marks in each column. You will have a basic idea of your personal Ayurvedic constitution.
This test is in no way meant to diagnose and of course can not take the place of a trained practitioner. If you are interested in bringing Ayurveda into you life we suggest you consult a practitioner in your area and look at the books we recommend. More information about Ayurveda will be coming to this site soon.
